Massachusetts’ Cannabis Control Commission is currently limping along with only three members, a situation causing serious concern for those of us waiting on the state's social consumption rules. With two empty seats and no clear timeline for new appointments, the commission faces a high risk of deadlock since every remaining member must now agree on any motion to move forward. While lawmakers are considering a bill to restructure the agency for better accountability, the immediate result is more delays for the public lounges and cafes we were promised years ago.

This internal dysfunction matters to everyday tokers because it stalls the rollout of safe, social spaces to enjoy our favorite flower and edibles. The commission had a mid-2025 goal for these regulations, but that target now feels "to be determined." For the community, a fully staffed and functional board is the only way to finally move past the red tape and open the doors to a more accessible and social cannabis culture.
