Nearly 188,000 people were arrested for marijuana possession and another 16,000 for selling or growing cannabis in the U.S. last year, according to the FBI's latest annual crime report. While these figures are likely understated due to data inconsistencies, cannabis-related offenses saw a slight decrease from 2023. Despite the reduction, marijuana remains the most common illegal substance for which Americans are arrested. The FBI's data has faced criticism for inconsistencies and incomplete reporting from state and local police, making it challenging to draw accurate policy conclusions. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) also noted that the marijuana rescheduling process remains stalled.

Marijuana Moment

The FBI just dropped its latest crime report, and the numbers are a sobering reminder that the "War on Drugs" is still very much alive. Last year, law enforcement made over 204,000 marijuana-related arrests across the country. While that’s a slight dip from 2023, it’s still wild to think that nearly 188,000 of those busts were for simple possession. In fact, cannabis remains the most common reason Americans find themselves in handcuffs for drug offenses, accounting for 27% of all possession arrests.

The data is admittedly a bit of a mess—federal reporting is notoriously inconsistent, and many local agencies do not even share their stats—so these figures are likely even higher than reported. Meanwhile, the DEA is still sitting on its hands regarding federal rescheduling. For everyday tokers, this matters because it highlights the massive gap between state-level progress and federal reality. Even as we celebrate more legal shops opening, thousands are still being caught in the legal crosshairs. It’s a clear sign that our community needs to keep pushing for full federal reform to ensure no one loses their freedom over a plant.
