New Ohio laws effective March 20 restrict recreational cannabis by banning public consumption, prohibiting out-of-state transport, and lowering extract potency to 70%. The regulations also require original packaging for storage, limit home cultivation, and disqualify workers fired for drug use from unemployment benefits.

Ohio tokers, it is time to brush up on the playbook because the rules for the Buckeye State’s cannabis landscape just underwent a significant overhaul. While voters gave the green light to recreational use back in 2023, new legislative adjustments that kicked in this March have added several layers of "do’s and don’ts" that every local enthusiast needs to know to stay on the right side of the law.

The biggest takeaway for those living near the border: those quick trips to Michigan for a restock are officially off-limits. Bringing any adult-use products across state lines into Ohio is now a legal no-go, and out-of-state sellers are barred from shipping directly to your door. If you are holding, keep it local.

When you are out and about, remember that the "public" part of public consumption is being taken very seriously. Smoking or vaping is restricted to private residences. If you are a renter, you are generally in the clear unless your lease specifically says otherwise. For those transporting their stash, treat it like an open container of alcohol; once a package is unsealed, it belongs in the trunk or the very back of the vehicle, completely out of the driver's reach. Keeping everything in its original, branded packaging—even after opening—is now a mandatory requirement for storage.

There are also some changes to what you’ll find on dispensary shelves. Extract potency has been dialed back from 90% to a 70% cap, and you won’t be seeing any gummies shaped like animals or fruit anymore, as the state moves to make products less appealing to kids. On the bright side, home growing remains a solid perk of the Ohio system, allowing for six plants per person or twelve per household.

While these tighter restrictions might feel like a step back from the original spirit of Issue 2, staying informed helps protect the community. By following these storage and transport guidelines, we ensure the culture stays respected and accessible for everyone in the long run. Stay safe and stay elevated, Ohio!
