  • Rescheduling Finally Brings Some Tax Relief, but It’s Not a Total Win for the Industry | Toker's Guide

The Trump administration's marijuana rescheduling move provides some tax benefits for the cannabis industry, though relief from Section 280E is expected to be limited. < Back Rescheduling Finally Brings Some Tax Relief, but It’s Not a Total Win for the Industry Apr 24, 2026 Source: Chris Roberts MJbizDaily Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link The recent decision by the federal government to move cannabis to Schedule III is a massive milestone that has everyone in the community talking. For years, the industry has been held back by a prehistoric tax rule known as 280E, which essentially prevented legal businesses from deducting normal operating expenses like rent or employee wages. While this new reclassification finally opens the door for some serious tax relief, it is important to understand that this win comes with a few significant caveats. The most important thing to keep in mind is that this specific round of relief is currently focused on the medical side of the market. Because the rescheduling order draws a line between state-licensed medical operations and the broader adult-use or recreational market, the benefits aren't hitting everyone equally just yet. For those running medical-only shops, this is a total game-changer that could lower effective tax rates almost overnight. However, many of the spots we visit for recreational flower might still be stuck navigating the old rules for a little while longer. So, why does this matter to the average enthusiast? When local businesses aren't being squeezed by unfair tax burdens, they have more resources to invest back into what we care about: better quality control, more diverse strain selections, and more knowledgeable staff. It also helps stabilize the local shops we love, ensuring they can keep their doors open and continue serving the community. While the legal experts and accountants work through the fine print, the momentum is clearly moving in the right direction. It’s a huge step toward treating our favorite plant like the legitimate medicine and cultural staple it is. As the transition unfolds, keep an eye on your local dispensaries—especially those with medical licenses—as they may be the first to pass these operational savings on through better rewards programs or improved in-store experiences. We are witnessing the end of a long era of prohibition-style taxation, and that is definitely something to be enthusiastic about. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Cookies & Alt Sol "Ridgeline Lantz" Strain Review - Takoma Wellness Center Ridgeline Lantz, cultivated by Alt Sol and currently available at Takoma Wellness Center, exudes an impressive pedigree. • Congress Steps Up On Psychedelic Reform As AOC Backs Natural Healing For Mental Health | Toker's Guide

This article discusses the House's passage of bipartisan amendments attached to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2027. The amendments aim to extend a Department of Defense psychedelics research initiative for an additional six years and codify elements of a presidential executive order regarding emerging therapeutic interventions. < Back Congress Steps Up On Psychedelic Reform As AOC Backs Natural Healing For Mental Health Jul 30, 2026 Source: Tom Angell Marijuana Moment Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Things are shifting inside the halls of Congress, and it is bringing some serious hope for natural wellness advocates. Bipartisan lawmakers just pushed through major updates to the defense spending bill, opening up huge opportunities for exploring the healing power of alternative plants and fungi. The House greenlit measures that will fund military research into therapeutic choices like psilocybin and MDMA for nearly another decade, ensuring our veterans get a real shot at cutting-edge care. For everyday enthusiasts who believe in plant-based options, this news is a massive win. For years, advocates have argued that strict federal scheduling ignores real scientific evidence and locks people out of life-changing relief. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez highlighted how crucial these measures are, pointing out that natural options like psilocybin are showing incredible success for individuals struggling with severe, treatment-resistant trauma when standard options fail. This policy pivot isn't just about laboratory trials; it is mirroring a widespread cultural shift. Lawmakers noted that microdosing and mindful plant use have gone completely mainstream, finding a place in the daily routines of working professionals everywhere who are looking to balance their mental wellness. By moving past outdated drug-war mindsets, these fresh measures represent a major step toward standardizing and accepting alternative therapies. While the package still needs to clear the Senate before becoming law, the momentum is undeniably building. Expanding these programs means more data, better resources, and eventually, easier access for everyone who needs it. For the broader green community, seeing Congress acknowledge the therapeutic benefits of these compounds is incredibly validating. It reminds us all to keep staying educated, supporting local policy shifts, and keeping tabs on how our representatives vote on drug reform. Step by step, the future of plant medicine is looking brighter and more accessible than ever. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Cookies & Alt Sol "Ridgeline Lantz" Strain Review - Takoma Wellness Center Ridgeline Lantz, cultivated by Alt Sol and currently available at Takoma Wellness Center, exudes an impressive pedigree. • Op-Ed: Michigan’s Cannabis Tax Hike Serves as Warning to Other States | Toker's Guide

Michigan's implementation of a 24% wholesale cannabis tax has led to immediate sales declines and industry layoffs, reversing its status as a model for legal market growth. The author argues that high taxes drive consumers to the illicit market and urges states to maintain moderate tax rates to ensure economic stability and honor the medical legacy of cannabis. < Back Op-Ed: Michigan’s Cannabis Tax Hike Serves as Warning to Other States Feb 26, 2026 Source: Marijuana Moment Marijuana Moment Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Michigan was once the gold standard for legal weed, proving that low taxes could actually crush the illicit market and create a massive job boom. By keeping things affordable, they even managed to rival California's total sales despite having a fraction of the population. Unfortunately, that success is currently under fire after the state hiked its wholesale tax to a staggering 24% at the start of 2026. The results have been a total buzzkill: sales are plummeting, cultivation centers are closing, and layoffs are hitting hardworking folks across the industry. This is a major wake-up call for the community because it shows how quickly greed can ruin a good thing. When states treat cannabis like a "sin tax" cash cow instead of medicine, the legal shops can’t compete with street prices, and everyone loses. For us tokers, this matters because high taxes mean less variety and higher prices at the counter. If we want a stable, accessible market that respects the plant’s medical roots, we need to keep pushing for fair, moderate tax rates. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Cookies & Alt Sol "Ridgeline Lantz" Strain Review - Takoma Wellness Center Ridgeline Lantz, cultivated by Alt Sol and currently available at Takoma Wellness Center, exudes an impressive pedigree. • Virginia Senate Committee Adds Harsher Penalties to Cannabis Retail Proposal | Toker's Guide

A Virginia bill setting up a regulated adult-use cannabis market advanced from the Senate Courts of Justice Committee with amendments adding harsher penalties for illegal sales, buying without a license, and underage possession. These penalties, which include a Class 1 misdemeanor for first offenses, aim to align cannabis crimes with alcohol laws and incentivize the legal market; another amendment restored the current law punishing illegal possession of over five pounds with the intent to sell. < Back Virginia Senate Committee Adds Harsher Penalties to Cannabis Retail Proposal Feb 9, 2026 Source: TG Branfalt Ganjapreneur Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link The Virginia bill to set up a regulated adult-use cannabis market advanced last week from the Senate Courts of Justice Committee with amendments from the chair that add harsher penalties for illegal cannabis sales, buying cannabis from someone without a retail license, and underage possession, Virginia Public Media reports. Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D), the committee chair, argued that cannabis-related crimes should align with those the state imposes for alcohol, and that without penalties, there would be no incentive for people utilize the legal market. One amendment would impose a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine, for a first conviction for illegal sales. The penalty for that crime in the original version of the bill imposed a Class 2 misdemeanor charge. Another amendment would impose a Class 1 misdemeanor for buying cannabis from someone without a license and for underage possession. Under the previous version of the bill, underage possession only called for a $25 fine and substance abuse and cannabis education class requirements. Surovell said people under 21 convicted of these crimes could have the charges deferred or dismissed, and that the aim of the harsher penalties for youth was to draw parallels between cannabis and alcohol. Another amendment keeps some of the state’s current cannabis laws intact – such as illegal possession of more than five pounds of cannabis with the intent to sell, which is punishable with between five and 30 years in prison. That law was repealed in the original version of the legislation. The amended version of the bill passed out of the committee. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Cookies & Alt Sol "Ridgeline Lantz" Strain Review - Takoma Wellness Center Ridgeline Lantz, cultivated by Alt Sol and currently available at Takoma Wellness Center, exudes an impressive pedigree. A federally funded study by UC San Diego found that about one in three American CBD users use it as a substitute or supplement for medications, particularly painkillers like ibuprofen and Tylenol. While researchers highlighted the potential for drug-drug interactions, they also noted CBD's low risk of side effects compared to opioids and its role in managing conditions like joint pain and anxiety. < Back Federally Funded Study Finds Millions Use CBD Instead of Traditional Pain Medications Mar 9, 2026 Source: Kyle Jaeger Marijuana Moment Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link A new federally funded study from UC San Diego has confirmed what many in our community already know: CBD is a powerhouse for wellness. The research reveals that roughly one-third of American CBD users are opting for this cannabinoid as a substitute or supplement for traditional meds, especially over-the-counter painkillers like Tylenol and ibuprofen. Beyond physical aches like joint pain, folks are also leaning on CBD to manage anxiety. While researchers noted the need for more data on drug interactions, they acknowledged that CBD carries a much lower risk of side effects and dependency compared to harsh pharmaceuticals like opioids. This is a massive win for tokers because it validates the therapeutic potential of the plant using government-backed data. For regular users, this study bridges the gap between anecdotal "cures" and clinical evidence, making a strong case for integrating CBD into a balanced lifestyle. As federal reclassification looms, seeing millions of people successfully swap out pills for plants is an encouraging sign that the stigma is fading and accessibility is finally catching up to demand. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Cookies & Alt Sol "Ridgeline Lantz" Strain Review - Takoma Wellness Center Ridgeline Lantz, cultivated by Alt Sol and currently available at Takoma Wellness Center, exudes an impressive pedigree.
