DOT Reminder: Medical Weed and Hemp Won’t Save Your Job from a Positive Drug Test

The Department of Transportation is doubling down on its strict drug testing stance, reminding substance abuse professionals that there are no excuses for a positive THC result. Even if you're in a state where medical marijuana is legal or you’re using federally legal hemp oil, the DOT says these claims can’t be used to justify a violation for safety-sensitive workers like truck drivers or pilots. This isn't exactly a new rule, but rather a firm nudge from the Trump administration to ensure that federal regulations stay consistent, regardless of shifting state laws or accidental ingestion claims.
For the cannabis community, this serves as a major reality check. While it’s frustrating to see legal medical use dismissed so easily, it highlights the ongoing friction between state progress and federal employment mandates. Until we get a standardized test for actual impairment rather than just presence, workers in these industries have to stay extra vigilant. It’s a clear sign that while the culture is changing, the federal red tape isn’t budging just yet.
