Marijuana Moment
For decades, the University of Mississippi held a total monopoly as the only federal source for research-grade cannabis, but that era has officially gone up in smoke. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) recently pulled the plug on its production deal with the school, opting not to place any new orders despite an active contract through 2028. This move follows a similar cut from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) earlier this year. While "Ole Miss" will still keep its hand in the game through various research centers, the government is finally diversifying by opening doors to other DEA-approved bulk growers.
This is a massive win for the community because the Mississippi monopoly was notorious for producing low-potency, "schwag-tier" flower that didn't resemble what tokers actually find in real-world dispensaries. By allowing modern facilities to step up, scientists can finally study the high-quality, high-THC products we actually use. It’s a vital step toward breaking the research "paradox" and getting the science-backed evidence needed to end federal prohibition once and for all.
