GOP Lawmakers Push to Expand Cannabis Waivers for Military Recruits and Allow Hemp Use

GOP lawmakers are pushing some much-needed common sense into the military’s stance on cannabis. Representatives Dave Joyce and Tony Gonzales have filed amendments to a major defense bill that would make it easier for recruits with a history of marijuana use to join the service. While the Army and Navy already have waiver systems for those who test positive for THC, this proposal calls on the Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force to stop being so strict and follow suit. Another huge win in this bill would protect service members who use legal hemp and CBD products, which are currently banned across most branches.

This is a massive step forward for the community because it acknowledges that past cannabis use shouldn’t disqualify someone from serving their country, especially during a recruitment shortage. For everyday tokers and veterans, seeing Congress fight to protect the use of legal hemp is a sign that the federal government is finally starting to align with reality. It’s about time our service members aren't penalized for using a plant that is legal in most of the country.
