Maryland lawmakers are debating House Bill 365, which seeks to prevent authorized medical cannabis patients from being denied the right to purchase, own, possess, or carry a firearm solely based on their patient status, addressing a current loophole in state law. This state-level reform would not affect the similar federal prohibition, which is currently facing scrutiny by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Maryland lawmakers are once again tackling a major hurdle for the medical community: the clash between cannabis use and Second Amendment rights. Delegate Robin Grammer is pushing House Bill 365, a common-sense reform aimed at closing a legal loophole that currently forces Maryland patients to choose between their medicine and their right to own a firearm. Right now, simply having a medical card can trigger a denial from state police during a gun purchase, even if you’ve never touched the plant. This bill would ensure that being a registered patient isn't the sole reason for losing your rights.

While this doesn't fix the federal ban currently being weighed by the Supreme Court, it’s a massive win for state-level autonomy. For regular tokers and patients, this is about ending the "second-class citizen" treatment of cannabis users. No one should have to sacrifice their constitutional rights to access a legal, life-changing plant. It’s a huge step toward normalizing cannabis as a legitimate healthcare choice rather than a legal liability.
