Most Rhode Island Social Equity Cannabis Applicants Get Disqualified

Rhode Island’s path to a fair cannabis market just hit a significant speed bump. Out of nearly 100 hopefuls aiming for a social equity retail license, only 36 actually made the cut. That’s a tough 38% qualification rate for a program intended to help those most harmed by old-school prohibition. These verified applicants now have until late December to finalize their paperwork for a lottery that will hand out just six coveted licenses. Meanwhile, the state’s Cannabis Control Commission is also tightening the reins on hemp, officially adopting rules to keep THC levels low and products away from minors.

For the everyday toker, this matters because slow-rolling these licenses means fewer local, community-focused shops and potentially higher prices due to limited competition.
