Nebraska Advocates Warn Proposed Commission Rules Would Destroy Patient Access

Marijuana Moment
Nebraska's medical cannabis rollout is hitting some major turbulence, and advocates are sounding the alarm. Despite voters overwhelmingly approving medical access, the state's new Medical Cannabis Commission is facing criticism for a lack of transparency. The biggest red flag for the community is a proposed agreement that would hand significant rulemaking authority to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)—an agency that has historically been vocally anti-cannabis. With licensing deadlines looming in October, many feel these bureaucratic maneuvers are intentional hurdles designed to stall the program.
For patients in the Cornhusker State, this is a frustrating "gut punch." While the laws officially allow possession with a doctor’s recommendation, there’s still no legal way to actually buy the medicine in-state. This matters to the broader community because it highlights how political gatekeeping can undermine the will of the people even after a victory at the ballot box. Keeping the pressure on and showing up for public comment is the only way to ensure patient access doesn't get buried in red tape.
