New Jersey lawmakers have filed two bills to legalize home marijuana cultivation, with one (S2564) covering recreational consumers and medical patients with specific plant limits, and the other (S1578) allowing only medical patients to grow a limited number of plants while requiring them to notify regulators. The legislation is intended to expand access to medical cannabis, though it faces resistance from outgoing Governor Phil Murphy, while incoming Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has expressed support.

Marijuana Moment

New Jersey might finally live up to its "Garden State" nickname if two new bills gain traction. State lawmakers recently introduced legislation that could finally legalize home cultivation. The first proposal, S2564, is a game-changer for everyone; it allows adults 21 and over to grow up to six plants personally, with a 12-plant cap per household. Medical patients get even more leeway, with a 10-plant limit. A second, more restrictive bill, S1578, focuses strictly on patients, allowing for four mature and four immature plants, provided they notify the state.

While Governor Murphy has been a bottleneck for home grow advocates, the incoming Governor-elect has already voiced support for these common-sense limits. This is a massive win for the local community because home grow is the ultimate form of accessibility. For patients on a budget or connoisseurs hunting for specific, clean genetics, being able to tend your own garden ensures you aren't at the mercy of dispensary prices or limited shelf selections. It’s about time New Jersey let its citizens actually garden.
