Texas Governor Sets Hemp Regulation Priorities for Special Session

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is taking a firm stand on the future of hemp in the Lone Star State. After swatting away a potential statewide ban on hemp products containing THC, the Governor has signaled that he prefers a path of strict regulation over total prohibition. During an upcoming special legislative session, lawmakers will dive into a new agenda focused on two major pillars: protecting minors and establishing a robust regulatory framework for hemp-derived products.
Abbott’s proposed rules are extensive, ranging from child-resistant packaging and mandatory testing to restricting sales near schools. He even suggested treating these cannabinoids similarly to how the state manages alcohol. While some hardline politicians are pushing for a full ban, public sentiment and veteran advocates are largely on the side of keeping the industry alive but safe.
For the everyday toker, this is a massive win. A total ban would have wiped out access to popular products and crushed a thriving local industry. By moving toward a "regulated but legal" model, Texas ensures that adults can still access their favorite products while improving overall safety and quality standards across the board.
