A new study found that medical marijuana legalization is associated with significant reductions in opioid prescribing, with an average 16% decrease in opioid prescriptions in states with medical cannabis programs. The study also noted an increase in NSAID use, suggesting a substitution from opioids to safer alternatives. These findings support medical cannabis laws as a policy tool for reducing opioid use and promoting safer pain management, particularly among cancer patients and non-cancer Black patients. Other research has also shown similar findings, including reductions in fatal opioid overdoses and monetary payments from opioid manufacturers to doctors specializing in pain.

Marijuana Moment

A new study published in the American Journal of Health Economics provides even more evidence that medical marijuana is a game-changer for public health. Researchers found that states with legal medical cannabis saw an average 16% drop in opioid prescriptions, with some states seeing declines as high as 22%. Even better, the data shows that patients are naturally swapping out heavy narcotics for safer alternatives like NSAIDs and, of course, the plant itself. This trend was especially strong among cancer patients and Black patients, where opioid use plummeted by over 20%.

For the cannabis community, this isn’t just another statistic—it’s a powerful argument for accessibility. For years, we’ve known that cannabis is a safer, more natural way to manage pain, and seeing the data catch up to our lived experience is huge. It proves that when people have the option to choose green over pills, they take it. This research gives policymakers the green light to treat cannabis as a legitimate tool for fighting the opioid crisis, which eventually means less stigma and better access for all of us.
