Marijuana Moment

California's legal weed scene just caught a major break. The State Assembly recently voted 74-0 to hit the brakes on a scheduled tax hike that would have bumped the excise rate from 15% to 19%. Instead of letting that increase kick in this July, lawmakers are pushing to delay it for another five years. This is a massive win for the industry, as keeping the tax at 15% helps licensed shops stay competitive against the unregulated market.

For everyday tokers, this is great news because higher taxes usually mean higher prices at the counter. By freezing the tax rate, the state is giving small businesses and social equity operators a chance to survive in a tough market without passing the bill to the consumer. It’s a smart, practical move that prioritizes community access and industry stability over a quick revenue grab. Hopefully, the Senate follows suit so we can keep our favorite local dispensaries thriving and our stash affordable.
