The California State Fair's Cannabis Experience exhibit allows attendees to purchase cannabis seeds for a penny and is the first state fair to permit on-site cannabis sales and consumption. Attendees at this year’s California State Fair can purchase a baggie of
cannabis seeds for a penny at the California Cannabis Experience exhibit, CBS
News reports.

Fair officials added the cannabis exhibit in 2022 but made history last
year as the first state fair in the U.S. to allow on-site cannabis sales
and consumption. The event includes a cannabis cultivation exhibit, just
like any other agricultural product in the state, but this year, organizers
expanded the now-annual California Cannabis Awards to include competitions
for cannabis products, including blunts, hash, and infused chocolates.

Attendees must be at least 21 years old to explore the fair’s cannabis
exhibit and partake in the available products.

“We’ve already given away thousands of seeds,” Dustin Moore, co-founder of
the California cannabis retailer Embarc, said in the report. “Under
California law, we have to sell them for a penny to be compliant.” The
seeds come from the Humboldt Seed Company.

Cannabis is a hearty plant that can be grown easily either indoors or
outdoors, and organizers hope that the easy access to cannabis seeds will
give exposure to cannabis home growing, which is legal under California
state law.

“It’s a weed, literally. That’s why they call it weed, so growing cannabis
is about as simple as keeping a weed alive in your backyard. Sun, water,
and fertilizer, and a little bit of love. That’s all it takes.” — Moore,

Additionally, organizers said next year’s event will include a competition
category for home-grown cannabis.

The California State Fair is open this year from July 11-27. Day pass
tickets cost $18 per day for adults, $14 for seniors (aged 62+), $12 for
children ages 5-12, and are free for children aged 4 and under.
