The District of Columbia is still caught in a political headlock as House lawmakers recently voted to keep blocking the city from launching a regulated recreational cannabis market. Despite D.C. voters giving the green light to legalization way back in 2014, a federal spending rider—pushed by anti-cannabis Rep. Andy Harris—continues to prevent the city from using its own tax dollars to set up a legal sales system.
It is frustrating to see local autonomy ignored, especially since this "rider" has been a bipartisan buzzkill for years, appearing in budget requests from both the current and previous administrations. On a brighter note, the Senate is showing some love for veterans, advancing provisions that could allow VA doctors to finally recommend medical cannabis in legal states.
For the D.C. community, this stalemate means continuing to rely on the medical program workaround or the unregulated "gifting" market instead of a safe, taxed, and transparent retail environment. It’s a reminder that while the culture is winning, the federal red tape is still a major buzzkill for accessibility and local progress.
