Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) states that while he is hopeful for the SAFER Banking Act to pass, other priorities like war and reconciliation have delayed its progress. The bill aims to protect banks working with state-legal cannabis businesses. Despite frustration from advocates and industry stakeholders, the bill has not yet been introduced in the current Congress, though it cleared a Senate committee last year. Republican lawmakers also express hope for the bill's passage, noting the "second tier" prohibition faced by the cannabis industry. The Congressional Budget Office released an analysis on the economic impact of the reform, and JPMorgan Chase has indicated they would provide banking services if federal law changed.

Marijuana Moment

It’s the same old song and dance on Capitol Hill as the SAFER Banking Act hits another roadblock. Senator Jeff Merkley, the bill’s main Democratic sponsor, recently shared that while there’s still plenty of "will" to get this passed, massive global issues like war and budget reconciliation have pushed cannabis reform to the back burner. This critical legislation, which would finally let banks work with state-legal cannabis businesses without fear of federal retaliation, has been stuck in limbo despite clearing a Senate committee last year.

While some GOP sponsors aren’t expecting movement until the fall, Merkley remains optimistic about a "sooner than later" timeline. For the everyday toker, this political gridlock is more than just frustrating; it’s a major safety and accessibility issue. Without federal banking protections, the industry is forced to operate largely in cash, making dispensaries targets for crime and keeping prices higher due to massive operational hurdles. Real progress here would mean a safer, more professional environment for the community and a huge step toward ending the "second-tier" treatment of our favorite plant.
