A new German study shows that marijuana use declined among youth (12-17) after cannabis was legalized, from 6.7% to 6.1% for past-year consumption, and from 1.3% to 1.1% for more regular consumption. However, there was a slight increase in use among young adults (18-25), from 23.3% to 25.6%. Germany's former health minister, Karl Lauterbach, stated that the results confirm the goal of legalization: to prevent consumption increases or even to decrease it among children and adolescents. The findings align with trends in the U.S. and Canada, where youth cannabis use has generally remained stable or declined post-legalization. Germany's legalization law took effect in April 2024, and the country plans an "open-ended evaluation" of the policy. Most Germans (59%) support allowing adults to purchase cannabis from licensed stores.

It turns out that one of the biggest scares used by those against legal weed is falling flat in Germany. A fresh study from their federal health officials shows that since they legalized adult-use cannabis in 2024, consumption among teens actually dropped. For kids aged 12 to 17, use dipped from 6.7% to 6.1%, proving that bringing the plant out of the shadows and into a regulated system doesn't automatically mean more kids are getting high. While young adults saw a small increase, the overall trend mirrors what we’ve seen in the U.S. and Canada: legalization doesn't lead to a youth usage explosion.

For the everyday toker, this is massive news. It provides real-world evidence that we can have a legal, accessible market for adults without harming the younger generation. When we replace street deals with regulated shops and social clubs, it’s easier to keep the herb out of the wrong hands while ensuring quality for the community. It’s a win for common sense and a big step toward ending the stigma worldwide.
