Louisiana lawmakers passed HB 568, a bill that would impose up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine for smoking or vaping marijuana within 2,000 feet of school property, including college campuses. The legislation now heads to Governor Jeff Landry, while other measures regarding medical marijuana access and a potential recreational legalization pilot program continue to move through the legislature.

Marijuana Moment

The vibes in the Pelican State are getting a bit heavy as lawmakers recently moved to tighten the reins on where folks can enjoy their favorite herb. A new bill, HB 568, just cleared the Senate and is sitting on Governor Jeff Landry’s desk, and it’s one that every local enthusiast needs to have on their radar. Essentially, this legislation introduces the threat of up to a year of jail time and a $1,000 fine for anyone caught lighting up or vaping within 2,000 feet of school property—and yes, that includes college campuses.

Now, we’re all about being respectful of the community, but the catch here is the distance. Two thousand feet is roughly a third of a mile. In many of Louisiana's vibrant urban and suburban neighborhoods, that radius can swallow up entire blocks, parks, and even private porches. Advocacy groups are rightfully concerned that this creates a bit of a "geographic trap" for responsible adults who are just trying to live their lives. It feels like a bit of a step back from the progress made in 2021 when the state decriminalized small amounts.

While the legal landscape for recreational use is hitting a speed bump, there is still plenty of positive energy moving through the halls of government. Other bills are currently advancing that would help terminal patients access medical relief in hospitals and even explore the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapies. Plus, there’s talk of a new task force to study full-scale legalization, showing that the conversation is far from over.

For our friends down in Louisiana, the best move right now is to stay informed and stay discrete. If you’re heading out, maybe opt for edibles or tinctures to keep things low-profile, and always be mindful of those school zones. We’re all in this together, and keeping the community safe while advocating for sensible, fair access is how we keep the culture growing strong. Keep your head up and stay elevated!
