Marijuana Moment
A recent thesis from Cal Poly Humboldt highlights a worrying trend: the legal marijuana market’s obsession with high THC and fast growth is creating a genetic bottleneck. By focusing on just a few profitable traits to satisfy state regulations and misinformed consumers, breeders are inadvertently shrinking the plant's global biodiversity. In fact, true wild cannabis may already be extinct, as modern hybrids continue to "contaminate" original landrace populations through wind pollination.
This push for "generic agricultural commodities" means that many unique, slow-flowering cultivars—which might hold undiscovered medicinal secrets—are being sidelined for whatever yields the most saleable flower. While researchers are still finding new cannabinoids, the commercial landscape is making "Craft Cannabis" more of a counterculture than the norm.
For everyday tokers, this matters because we’re losing out on the full therapeutic potential and diverse effects the plant has to offer. If we keep chasing higher percentages and ignoring genetic variety, we risk losing the "soul" of our favorite herb to corporate efficiency. Keep supporting local, small-batch growers who prioritize heritage and unique terpene profiles over raw potency!
