Ohio activists launched a referendum campaign to repeal key components of SB 56, a new law signed by Gov. DeWine that scales back the state's voter-approved marijuana law, bans most consumable hemp products outside of dispensaries, recriminalizes certain cannabis activities, and removes anti-discrimination protections. If the group collects enough certified signatures, the law's implementation will be halted until voters can decide on the repeal at the ballot.

Ohio activists are fighting back after Governor DeWine signed SB 56, a bill that significantly rolls back the cannabis protections voters approved in 2023. The group, Ohioans for Cannabis Choice, just cleared their first hurdle by submitting initial signatures for a referendum to repeal the most restrictive parts of the new law. If they can gather roughly 250,000 more signatures, they could halt the law's implementation until a statewide vote.

The new legislation is a major buzzkill: it bans most hemp products outside of dispensaries, recriminalizes possession of out-of-state cannabis, and strips away anti-discrimination protections for consumers. It even allows landlords to penalize tenants for vaping in their own backyards. Advocates argue this is a direct attack on the will of the people and the state's thriving hemp industry.

For regular tokers, this fight is essential. SB 56 essentially brings back "prohibition lite" by making legal activities risky again. Keeping these protections in place ensures that Ohio stays a fair, accessible, and safe place for the community to enjoy the plant without fear of unnecessary legal trouble.
