Ohio Lawmakers Move Forward with Bill to Scale Back Voter-Approved Cannabis Law and Add Hemp Rules

Ohio lawmakers are shaking things up with a new bill that significantly tweaks the marijuana legalization law voters passed in 2023. The House Judiciary Committee recently advanced a plan to align the hemp and marijuana industries, which means new potency limits and advertising rules for hemp-derived products. While it opens the door for hemp THC beverages in breweries, it also restricts where you can buy intoxicating hemp, moving those sales into licensed dispensaries and away from gas stations.

However, it’s not all good news for the community. Advocates are rightfully concerned because the bill strips away some anti-discrimination protections for users and could actually recriminalize possession if the stash isn't from a state-licensed shop or home grow. On the plus side, it does include an expedited pathway for expunging prior possession convictions. For everyday tokers, this matters because it shows that while the market is maturing, we have to stay vigilant to ensure the freedoms we voted for aren't watered down by legislative red tape.
