Robert F. Kennedy Jr., current HHS Secretary, is facing some wild allegations regarding his personal use of psychedelics. In a new tell-all book, journalist Olivia Nuzzi claims that despite his public persona of long-term sobriety, RFK Jr. was using DMT "for fun" as recently as his 2024 campaign. According to the book, he supposedly kept these trips hidden from his wife, even slipping away to smoke DMT-laced cigarettes while she was out. While he has been vocal about his support for therapeutic psychedelic research—especially for veterans—these claims of recreational use create a complicated picture for the man now overseeing the nation's health agencies.
For the cannabis and psychedelic community, this is a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, having a high-ranking official who personally understands the "classic psychedelic experience" could be a massive win for ending the "war on public health" and speeding up rescheduling. On the other hand, the hypocrisy of a top health official potentially using Schedule I substances while they remain illegal for the rest of us is a tough pill to swallow. Either way, it keeps the conversation about plant medicine front and center in the halls of power.
