Marijuana Moment

South Dakota patients can breathe a sigh of relief as state senators just shut down two major threats to their medical cannabis program. A Senate committee soundly rejected a pair of bills that aimed to pull the rug out from under the state’s 18,000 registered users. One proposal sought to completely dismantle the voter-approved program if marijuana is rescheduled federally, while the other attempted to impose arbitrary, unscientific THC potency caps as low as 5% for oils.

Fortunately, lawmakers and the Department of Health recognized that federal rescheduling doesn't automatically ensure local access, and they voted overwhelmingly to keep the current system intact. This victory is a huge win for the community because it protects the right of patients to choose the specific medicine and potency levels that actually work for their conditions. For everyday tokers, this reinforces the importance of staying vocal; it shows that even in conservative-leaning states, well-established access and patient rights are becoming harder for politicians to roll back without a serious fight. Keep growing, South Dakota!
