  • Nebraska Lawmakers to Hold Public Forums on Medical Cannabis | Toker's Guide

Nebraska state senators are holding public forums this weekend to discuss medical cannabis-related issues and legislative proposals. The lawmakers behind the events — state Sens. John Cavanaugh (D), Rick Holdcroft (R), and Ben Hansen (D) — say they want to hear from the public on the issue of legalizing and implementing a medical cannabis program, which voters overwhelmingly approved last November. In particular, the lawmakers want to discuss legislation proposed by Hansen to implement the state’s voter-approved program, which stalled out earlier this month in the Nebraska General Affairs Committee. “Since the legislature has failed to act at this point, I want to give the citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard by their elected representatives.” — Sen. Cavanaugh, via the Nebraska Examiner The forums are scheduled to take place this weekend, from May 3-5. The forums will be at the Carpenters Union Hall in La Vista on Saturday from 1-3 p.m.; at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Thompson Alumni Center on Sunday from 1-3 p.m.; and at the Southeast Community College in Lincoln on Monday from 5-7 p.m. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Cake Boss - Fluent, Clearwater (Florida Medical) Cake Boss, available at Fluent dispensary in Clearwater, Florida, is a slightly indica-dominant hybrid strain (60% indica, 40% sativa) th... • Virginia Gov. Vetoes Bill to Improve Medical Cannabis Labeling | Toker's Guide

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed legislation that would have improved labeling on medical cannabis products and codify permissible locations for the delivery of medical cannabis products. Glenn Youngkin (R) last week vetoed legislation that would have improved labeling on medical cannabis products sold in the state and codify permissible locations for the delivery of medical cannabis products. In his veto message, Youngkin said that while he approved of the labeling changes, the delivery provisions raised “public safety and regulator concerns” despite the state already allowing the delivery of medical cannabis products. “Permitting deliveries to businesses – including locations where substance abuse, gambling, or other high-risk activities may occur – creates unnecessary risks for diversion, theft, and unintended access by minors. Current regulations already provide for safe, tightly controlled home delivery of medical cannabis. This framework ensures access for patients while maintaining strong safeguards to prevent misuse.” — Youngkin in the veto message  In a statement, JM Pedini, NORML development director and the executive director for Virginia NORML, said Youngkin’s claims that the bill “would have expanded marijuana access are categorically false.” “Anyone who can read can see that this bill enumerated multiple prohibitions on delivery locations which do not currently exist under Virginia law,” Pedini said. The veto is Youngkin’s third this legislative session related to cannabis policy in the state. In March, the governor vetoed legislation to establish regulations to implement an adult-use cannabis industry in the state and a bill that would have protected the parental rights of adults who lawfully possess or consume cannabis in accordance with state law. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Cake Boss - Fluent, Clearwater (Florida Medical) Cake Boss, available at Fluent dispensary in Clearwater, Florida, is a slightly indica-dominant hybrid strain (60% indica, 40% sativa) th... • Cannabis Companies Struggle with Soaring Insurance Costs in 2025 | Toker's Guide

The cannabis sector is moderating in 2025, with sales up but product prices down 10 percent. Businesses struggle to find the right insurance, with 75 percent of respondents stating they lack adequate coverage. Rising costs, a "tight market" for commercial auto insurance, and limited insurers willing to participate also contribute to the challenges. Cannabis businesses need to protect themselves through risk-management and organizational resilience. The cannabis insurance market is hardening, with rising premiums and stricter underwriting. < Back Cannabis Companies Struggle with Soaring Insurance Costs in 2025 Jun 10, 2025 Brian O’Connell MG Magazine Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link The cannabis sector is moderating in 2025, with sales up but product prices down 10 percent, according to Hub International’s *2025 Cannabis Outlook* Executive Survey. That’s a demanding scenario for industry businesses, which often struggle to find the right insurance. The Hub report notes about 75 percent of industry respondents stated their organizations “don’t have adequate insurance to protect against risks that will harm profits. Companies are often left with a choice between unaffordable rates and no protection.” Cost remains a big issue, too. A “tight market” for commercial auto insurance means premiums for product transportation within the industry have tripled. “Rising costs and low capacity have made it challenging for cannabis businesses to secure appropriate coverage,” the report noted. It’s not only higher insurance prices and lower sales revenues that are vexing operators this year. Among the other issues also weighing on company decision-makers is the lack of adequate coverage due to a paucity of insurance providers. “The current state of cannabis business insurance is quite restricted, with limited insurers willing to participate due to the high-risk perception and regulatory complexities,” said John Crist, founder of Prestizia Insurance in Dallas. Cultivators and retail stores, in particular, often struggle with obtaining adequate coverage. That’s partly by design, as insurers weigh the risks of offering coverage in a relatively young marketplace. “Best practices for these businesses include maintaining stringent compliance with state regulations and demonstrating a thorough risk-management strategy,” Crist said. “For instance, a cannabis retail client in New York had to implement extensive security and inventory-tracking systems to meet insurance requirements, which underscored the meticulous level of compliance needed.” Without a doubt, insurers need to do a better job of understanding what cannabis companies need. Insurers must do their homework and figure out what makes firms tick to craft the correct coverage. That’s especially the case at the customer-facing agent level. “One of the biggest challenges for new agents is the ability to learn and understand the business and marketplace,” said C.L. Mike Schmidt, an attorney with Schmidt & Clark LLP in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “There are a lot of ins and outs that an agent should attempt to learn so they’re well-equipped to serve their clients. When it comes to underwriting the risk, agents must comprehend that the majority of policies are written on proprietary endorsements, so knowing the ins and outs of each carrier’s form is critical.” Cannabis businesses need to protect themselves, too. Sector companies are going to have to dig deep, especially in key areas like risk-management and organizational resilience, in an environment where many companies are a single weather disaster, supply chain, or data fraud incident away from significant financial damage. “Organizations that focus on organizational resiliency efforts will be poised for success through the implementation of a robust business continuity plan that can pressure-test these potential loss scenarios,” the Hub outlook report noted. “An insurance advisor with cannabis industry expertise can help educate both the buyer and the seller on best practices, making sure businesses secure proper runoff or [directors and officers] policies to protect the bottom line.” Companies have faced myriad challenges getting insured and will need to show patience as the insurance industry resets in a volatile year. “The cannabis insurance market is characterized by a hardening trend, meaning premiums are rising while insurers are implementing stricter underwriting requirements,” noted CoverCannabis’s 2025 Cannabis Insurance Outlook report. “Factors driving this trend include heightened regulatory scrutiny, an increase in product liability claims, and risks associated with emerging consumption methods. This environment makes it harder for businesses to access affordable and comprehensive insurance coverage.” ------------------------------ [image: iQ analyst Brian O'Connell headshot] *In his role as analyst for InsuranceQuotes, Brian O’Connell studies the insurance industry and provides tips, advice, and insights. • What’s pH? Understanding and Measuring pH in Your Grow Room | Toker's Guide

pH refers to the level of alkalinity or acidity of a liquid substance, measured on a scale of 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. For cannabis plants, an optimum pH range of 5.2 to 5.9 is recommended for fast-growing, leafy plants, and 5.2 for optimal elemental uptake in inert growing media. Measuring pH can be done with a pH kit, and adjustment involves adding saltpeter, sulfuric acid, or phosphorous to lower alkaline pH, or calcium carbonate, lime, or potash to raise low pH. Proper handling of chemicals involves using glass or plastic, and adding small amounts to the nutrient solution gradually. Flushing the system with pH-balanced water every couple of weeks is important to prevent salt accumulation. Growers can adjust pH before and after adding nutrients to ensure a desired range. < Back What’s pH? Understanding and Measuring pH in Your Grow Room Sep 4, 2025 Thomas Valentine Cannabis Now Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link What’s pH? This is a question that usually makes new growers scratch their heads and reach for the pipe. The term pH refers to the level of alkalinity or acidity of a liquid substance. The pH scale starts at 0 and rises to 14. A value of 7.0 is considered neutral, with values over 7.0 being alkaline and values below 7.0 being acidic. The liquid is the nutrient solution being used to grow a healthy cannabis plant. The nutrient solution is basically a cocktail of various chemicals. These chemicals can react to each other in a process called covalent bonding and form new chemicals that the plant can’t effectively use. This process of covalent bonding is largely dependent on the pH of the solution the chemicals are suspended in, in this case water. With the chemicals being used in the average hydroponic solution, a chemist would say that the optimum pH would be 7.0, which is neutral. In keeping the solution neutral, covalent bonding of the constituent parts of the solution will be kept to a minimum. However, since cannabis plants like a different pH level for optimum growth, it’s okay to lower the pH and take the slight loss of nutrient value. Fast growing, leafy plants generally like a lower pH in the range of 5.2 to 5.9. Fortunately, a lower pH will bond fewer nutrients than a higher pH will. If the pH value goes beyond the optimum range of 5.2 to 5.9, undesirable levels of nutritional deficiency and toxicity will occur, both of which can seriously impede plant growth. Be vigilant. In researching the various hydroponic methods in use, most of the growing media like rockwool, pea gravel and sand is relatively inert. That means the growing medium won’t react with the nutrients in the solution. For those methods that use inert media, a pH of 5.2 is recommended for optimal elemental uptake. It is at this pH level that the roots will assimilate the nutrients in the solution most efficiently. If the root has to work less to assimilate the required nutrients, the rest of the plant will benefit. *Measuring and Adjusting pH* Measuring pH is relatively easy and there are quite a few choices in terms of methods. The most inexpensive and low-tech method for measuring just requires purchasing a pH kit and taking a sample from the nutrient solution. After following the directions, use the color chart to determine the pH of the solution. This low-tech solution poses some obvious limitations, not the least of which is the difficulty in deciding which color is closest if you’ve been into the fruits of your previous harvest. The kits typically sell for $5 to $10. If the pH isn’t the appropriate level for your plant, knowing what chemical to add to the nutrient solution and when is paramount to success as a grower. When the pH level is alkaline, meaning the pH level is above seven, it can be lowered with saltpeter, sulfuric acid or phosphorous. When the pH value is too low, it can be raised with calcium carbonate, lime or potash. Most fertilizers cause a pH change in the nutrient solution. Adding fertilizer to the nutrient solution almost always results in a more acidic pH, so adjust accordingly. *Proper Handling* Handling all of these chemicals safely is important. As a general rule, never use metal. Instead opt for glass or plastic or the nutrients will react with the elements in the metal and mess up the nutrient ratios. Never add the acid to the vat of nutrient. Fill a small glass container with the nutrient to be balanced and add a few drops of the necessary chemical. Stir it in well and add small amounts at a time to the large vat of nutrient until the proper pH balance is achieved. As time goes on, the amount of salts produced by the breakdown of fertilizers in the medium causes it to become increasingly acidic. Eventually, the concentration of these salts in the medium will stunt the plant and cause browning out of the foliage. As the plant gets older, its roots become less effective in bringing food to the leaves. To avoid the accumulation of these salts in the medium and to ensure that the plant is getting all of the food it needs, be sure to flush the system with clean, pH-balanced water every couple of weeks. Do this in lieu of that cycle’s feeding. There’s always been a big debate over when to adjust your pH – before and after you add nutrients to the water, or just after. The truth is, growers can do both. The reasoning for doing both is that water is rarely dead on neutral. It’s either acidic or alkaline, depending on the region. Render the water neutral first by bringing it to a pH of 7.0. Then add the nutrients to that chemically-neutral solution and adjust to the desired range within 5.2 to 5.9 pH. Because there are so many factors that go into the delicate art of cultivating cannabis, learning how to properly measure and adjust the pH balance on nutrient solutions will have a clear effect on the appearance, potency and health of cannabis plants. Practicing and perfecting this step will be what makes a grower’s crop stand out from the crowd. *TELL US*, have you taken pH into consideration when growing cannabis plants? The post What’s pH? • Polls: Texas Republican Voters Reject Ban on Hemp-Based Products | Toker's Guide

Texas Republicans are more likely to oppose than support Senate Bill 3, which bans hemp-based products. A recent poll shows that 47% of Republican primary voters oppose the ban, while 37% support it. The poll also indicates that a majority of voters believe the ban will create opportunities for drug cartels and increase black market sales. The Texas Hemp Business Council urges Governor Greg Abbott to veto the bill, emphasizing that Texans do not want it and that it threatens jobs. < Back Polls: Texas Republican Voters Reject Ban on Hemp-Based Products Jun 12, 2025 Mg Magazine Newswire MG Magazine Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link *AUSTIN, Texas —* Texas Republicans are more likely to oppose than support Senate Bill 3, the bill banning hemp-based products that awaits a signature from Gov. Greg Abbott. A new poll commissioned by the Texas Hemp Business Council (THBC) indicates 47% of Texas Republican primary voters oppose banning hemp, while 37% support a ban and 16% said they don’t know. It also shows that 45% oppose banning THC, while 35% support a THC ban and 21% don’t know. Opposition to a ban is even stronger among those who have an active-duty or former member of the military in their household. Despite political claims to the contrary, Texas Republicans and Democrats do not support banning hemp-derived THC. They want it regulated, restricted to adults and away from minors. But they do not want prohibition. Two independent, statistically valid polls have now shown that bans like SB 3 are deeply unpopular, especially among the very voters who will determine the future of Republican leadership in Texas. Last week, the Texas Hemp Business Council (THBC) delivered 5,000 handwritten letters and a petition with more than 118,000 signatures to Abbott, urging him to veto SB 3 and save the 53,000 Texas jobs connected to hemp. “Texans do not want SB 3,” said Mark Bordas, executive director of THBC. “Texans recognize SB 3 for what it is: an attack on the rights and liberties of Texans that will destroy tens of thousands of jobs. We respectfully ask the Governor to listen to veterans, small business owners, Republican primary voters and others who want him to veto this heavy-handed bill. “We went out of our way to conduct the most credible poll possible, in which the segment of the voting population least likely to support our cause was queried,” he continued. “Even among Republican primary voters, SB 3 and its ban are highly unpopular. This is not a Republican or a Democrat issue. It’s about preserving economic and individual freedoms, which all Texans cherish.” SB 3 would encourage Texans who use hemp-based products to seek those products through illicit, unsafe markets. It will also create havoc and uncertainty for farmers, small business owners, and others who have devoted years of their careers to safe hemp-based products, Bordas said. The poll was commissioned by THBC and conducted by Texas Republican pollster Chris Perkins of Ragnar Research Partners. It also found: More than two-thirds of Republican primary voters (72%) believe military veterans should be able to access THC products as an alternative to opioids. 53% of Republican primary voters believe a ban will create opportunities for drug cartels. 55% of Republican primary voters believe a ban will increase black market sales. The poll of Texas Republicans reinforces the message of a broader statewide poll conducted by Baselice & Associates in March: 68% of Texas likely voters support legal THC hemp products with strict regulations, while just 20% support a ban. Republican voters prefer regulated legality (57%) over prohibition (29%), and support climbs even higher among independents (72%) and younger voters (76%), the Baselice poll found. Seniors, too, reject prohibition by double-digit margins. “These highly credible polls clearly show where voters stand, while some groups are pushing false and misleading narratives to support SB 3, hoping that more Texans would turn to alcohol if hemp-based products were banned,” said Bordas. “Every month in Texas, nearly 90 lives are lost to alcohol-related crashes, over 1,000 each year. Nationwide, alcohol ranks among the leading preventable causes of death. Hemp products, which are already regulated at the state and federal levels, offer popular alternative that many Texans rely on. Our industry also continues to support additional safeguards, including banning sales to anyone under 21 and setbacks from schools. Texans deserve legal choices, not fear-driven policies that push them toward more dangerous substances.” The Ragnar Research Partners poll of 800 likely Republican primary voters was conducted June 2-4 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Astre Cannabis Now Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Trick or treating might be out for you, but you can still have some fun that is equal parts cool and creepy. Scary movies are always an easy go-to for celebrating Halloween as an adult without feeling like you’re missing out on anything — especially if you’re not really into the idea of costume parties or haunted house attractions. And if you add some weed into the equation, you have the beginnings of a perfectly content night at home. Need some help picking out a strain for your movie marathon? These particular strain pairings are just for the fun of the holiday and not at all based on matching the post-consumption experience with the type of movie you’ll be watching…. which is a good thing. It’s probably not a good idea to try to intentionally smoke strains that will mirror the potential fear and paranoia of watching a scary movie. Instead, these strains will mellow you out, help you chill and just add to the entertainment factor. “It” + Pennywise Whether you choose the original (which you should) or the remake, there are lots of moments when you’ll be glad you went for a high-CBD indica to calm your nerves. Plus, seriously, what’s more peak stoner than smoking a strain that is the exact same name as the main character of the movie you’re watching? Like, really, just pat yourself on the back for this one. “The Shining” + Jack the Ripper Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance in this classic film about a family’s weird and disturbing winter at a hotel in Colorado. This energizing sativa might be a good choice to help keep you and your friends upbeat during some of the more slow or meandering parts of the movie where you could lose interest. Instead, you guys can giggle your way through until the next scare. “The Hunger” + Blood Orange Kush Bust out this oldie but goodie where the iconic David Bowie plays an ageless but still somehow relatively youthful vampire on the hunt for fresh blood. This movie is definitely more eerie than downright scary and the paired strain works well with keeping you relaxed and feeling good with the calm, methodical pace of the movie. “Carrie” + Killer Queen Mean teens, hella blood and a nightmare prom? Check. Though this film adapted from a Stephen King novel was made back in the ’70s, it’s still just as creepy now as it was then. You can expect lots of cerebral effects with this hybrid strain that will keep you feeling energized as your body settles into deep relaxation. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” + Sweet Dreams Wes Craven did a pretty good job at making people never want to fall asleep again thanks to the disturbing and frequent appearances by Freddy Krueger in their dreams and waking life. This creeper strain is good for lasting through the movie and getting you nice and relaxed for a good night’s sleep — minus the nightmares. “Psycho” + 3x Crazy Considered one of the best psychological horror movies of all time, this movie is home to the infamous shower scene that has been copied and parodied since its introduction in 1960. Pairing a nice indica strain with this film will have you feeling zenned out and comfortably relaxed even through all the screeching. “Night of the Living Dead” + Zombie OG Take a break from your “Walking Dead” marathon and throw on this classic movie all about the undead feeding on those still living. As the name suggests, this strain is super potent and will have you feeling heavily sedated. It’s great for a late-night solo smoke where you have every intention of falling asleep right afterward. “The Exorcist” + Holy Ghost This strain is good for stress and anxiety which could help you keep your cool during an intense, high-stakes movie about clearing a kid of demon possession. And to help with the residual trauma, Holy Ghost is good for a mood boost that can help you shake that lingering sinister feeling.
