- California's Treasurer Thinks the State's Cannabis Rules Need a Total Makeover | Toker's Guide
This Marijuana Moment newsletter highlights California Treasurer Fiona Ma's criticism of the state's cannabis legalization law and the passage of bipartisan psychedelics amendments to the federal defense bill. It also covers a Colorado study backing medical marijuana for workers' compensation and new THC/hemp regulations in Virginia and Texas. < Back California's Treasurer Thinks the State's Cannabis Rules Need a Total Makeover Jul 31, 2026 Source: Tom Angell Marijuana Moment Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Big changes are unfolding in the cannabis world, and there is a lot to break down for everyday enthusiasts who care about plant access, fair markets, and natural wellness. First up, the movement toward plant medicine is gaining serious traction in Washington. Lawmakers recently pushed forward new defense bill amendments focused on psychedelics. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the massive therapeutic potential of psilocybin for severe trauma, while other representatives openly acknowledged how common microdosing has become. Over on the West Coast, California’s Treasurer Fiona Ma took a bold stand for local culture, labeling the state's current corporate-heavy regulations an absolute failure and calling for a brand-new ballot initiative designed to lift up independent small farms and everyday consumers. On the medical front, a fantastic new study from Colorado shows that including medical cannabis in workers' compensation programs drastically cuts down on opioid reliance while providing measurable relief for chronic pain and boosting overall mobility. It is a major win for natural healing, though everyday users still face hurdles; for instance, a Florida court recently ruled that companies can still terminate employees for off-site medical usage. Meanwhile, states are adjusting their local rules. Missouri is working on official curbside pickup guidelines to make dispensary runs easier, while Texas and Virginia are tightening enforcement and rolling out new restrictions on hemp-derived cannabinoids. Whether you rely on the plant for therapeutic recovery, enjoy a casual microdose, or simply want to support your local independent growers, keeping an eye on these shifting state and federal dynamics is crucial. For anyone navigating the current landscape, it is always a smart practical tip to stay updated on your specific state's evolving labor laws regarding off-hours consumption to keep yourself fully protected while enjoying the plant. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Bomb Popz Infused Pre-Roll - Fade Co. - Employer Branding: Building Culture as Your Competitive Edge | Toker's Guide
In the cannabis industry, employer branding is crucial for attracting and retaining top talent. The pandemic has shifted the focus from physical office perks to authentic culture, relationships, and communication. A strong employer brand impacts recruitment, retention, and productivity, leading to long-term growth. Leadership behavior sets the tone, and transparency in messaging and visual identity is key. Top talent seeks dynamic challenges, internal mobility, and real benefits like healthcare and paid leave. Creating genuine human moments, even simple ones, builds trust and a supportive workplace. Employer branding is a survival strategy in the cannabis industry, as employees want to believe in where they work. < Back Employer Branding: Building Culture as Your Competitive Edge Sep 11, 2025 Source: Will Read MG Magazine Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link In the cannabis industry, where startup energy meets regulatory complexity and rapid growth, competition for skilled, mission-driven talent is fierce. For founders and operators, this creates a crucial question: What makes someone want to work for your company? An even more pertinent question is “How much are you investing in branding your workplace?” The pandemic permanently shifted how people experience work. With remote and hybrid environments becoming the norm, employer branding is no longer about cool office spaces or stocked fridges. In fact, building a company people want to work for today often means crafting experiences that have little to do with a physical location. It’s no longer about the place; it’s about the people. Culture is defined not by amenities, but by the relationships, communication, and energy your team brings to each other every day. If your team feels comfortable being themselves, sharing ideas, and connecting authentically (yes, even across Zoom calls or Slack channels), you’re already building a strong employer brand. Authenticity is key. It can’t be manufactured, and it definitely can’t be faked. The more real your company culture feels, the more attractive it becomes to potential hires. [image: Group of WeedMaps employees in the cannabis industry posing together outdoors in front of branded company signage.] Photo: WeedMaps Some may dismiss culture-building as soft or secondary to business operations. But your employer brand directly impacts recruitment, retention, and productivity. When people enjoy where they work and feel valued, they stay longer, collaborate better, and often become advocates for the company. And let’s be real: Hiring is expensive. Onboarding takes time. Training takes energy. When someone leaves, you lose more than just a role; you also lose momentum. That’s why a strong employer brand is a strategic asset. When employees feel aligned with your values and leadership, the ripple effects are real: better work, stronger client relationships, and long-term, sustainable growth. If you’re in a leadership position, your behavior sets the tone. When you lead with empathy and authenticity, your team feels it. And when your employees are energized and engaged, they pass that energy on to clients, partners, and each other. Culture isn’t about being performative. It’s about consistently showing up. Messaging that reflects who you really are as a company (i.e. human, transparent, creative) creates a magnetic effect. People want to be part of something real. They want to believe in where they work. That’s why everything from your careers page to your social media presence contributes to how your company is perceived as an employer. The tone of your job descriptions, the transparency in your messaging, and even the visual design of your website tell a story. Are you using that opportunity to stand out? A flat, corporate tone can deter great candidates. On the other hand, a voice that feels personal and authentic can signal your culture is different and you value people, not just productivity. Don’t forget about the power of visual identity and messaging. Both can signal innovation, openness, and trustworthiness before a candidate even clicks “apply.” So what is top talent in the cannabis space really looking for? More and more, people are drawn to companies not because “weed is cool” but because they want to work in a dynamic, emerging space full of novel challenges. These are self-motivated, growth-oriented individuals who aspire to solve problems in an industry that’s still taking shape. One of the strongest signals of a healthy employer brand is internal mobility. If employees see a real path to grow, whether that means learning new skills, stepping into leadership, or even switching departments, they’re far more likely to stay and engage. Empty promises of growth often backfire. If you want people to believe in the future of your company, make sure you’re creating a future they can be part of. But challenge alone won’t keep them. If you want to attract and retain top-tier talent, you need to provide security as well as advancement opportunities. That starts with offering real benefits. I’m talking about healthcare, paid leave, and other perks. These investments may stretch your budget, especially early on, but they demonstrate you care about the people helping your business grow. This brings me to my last point: the pizza party purpose. There was a time I thought team-building exercises were corny. And sure, a pizza party won’t fix a toxic workplace. But shared meals, casual hangs, and inside jokes over Slack channels? Honestly, these moments matter more than you’d think. They build trust. They create space for people to exhale. And sometimes, as a business owner, watching your team laugh over slices is the moment you realize you’re doing something right. [image: Dixie for mg Magazine] Photo: Dixie The goal isn’t to check off boxes on a “culture to-do list.” The goal is to create real, human moments. Sometimes, yes, a slice of pizza helps. In cannabis, employer branding isn’t just a recruitment tool. It’s a survival strategy. It’s what sets apart the companies that last from the ones that burn out. Because in the end, people don’t want just a job. They want to believe in where they work. If you get that part right — if you build a place that’s real, supportive, and driven by something deeper — you won’t just attract talent. You’ll also keep the top performers you hire. ------------------------------ Employer Branding: Key Questions 1. Why is employer branding important in cannabis? Employer branding helps cannabis companies attract and retain top talent, reducing costly turnover. 2. How can cannabis companies build a strong culture? Foster authenticity, empathy, and trust through communication, benefits, and real growth opportunities. 3. What do cannabis employees want most? Beyond perks, they want authentic culture, internal mobility, and real benefits like healthcare and paid leave. 4. How does culture affect business growth? Strong culture improves retention, productivity, and client relationships, driving long-term sustainable growth. ------------------------------ [image: Will Read co-founder CannaPlanners] As founder and CEO of CannaPlanners, Will Read brings a no-nonsense approach to disrupting the industry. - New Rules for Medical Cannabis Recommendations in Oklahoma Take Effect January 1 | Toker's Guide
New Oklahoma requirements for physicians in the medical cannabis program took effect January 1, mandating doctors complete an initial education course and register with the state Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) before recommending cannabis to patients, with non-compliant doctors being unable to make recommendations. < Back New Rules for Medical Cannabis Recommendations in Oklahoma Take Effect January 1 Dec 30, 2025 Source: TG Branfalt Ganjapreneur Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link New requirements for physicians looking to participate in Oklahoma’s medical cannabis program take effect January 1, KJRH reports. The new rules require doctors to complete an initial education course to register with the state Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) before they can recommend medical cannabis to patients. The bill was signed into law by Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) in May. Previously, the state’s rules only required physicians to be in good standing with their professional boards and consider “accepted standards a reasonable and prudent physician would follow” before making a patient recommendation for medical cannabis use. Doctors who don’t register and complete the program will be unable to recommend medical cannabis as of January 1, and patients who apply to the program using those physicians will be rejected. The state offers three classes for physicians seeking to participate in the program, and doctors are required to take at least one of the courses: - The Association of Cannabinoid Specialists course, which costs $199 with the accreditation valid until October 1, 2027 - The Answer Page course, which costs $95 with the accreditation valid until May 21, 2026 - The MM411 course, which costs $99 and is valid until December 31, 2026 Currently, there are about 260 physicians registered to recommend medical cannabis to patients in the state, according to OMMA data. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Bomb Popz Infused Pre-Roll - Fade Co. - Federal Judge Criticizes DEA Delay on Ayahuasca Religious Petition | Toker's Guide
A federal appeals court questioned a DEA lawyer over the agency's approximately six-year delay in ruling on a religious exemption petition from the Iowaska Church in Iowa, which seeks to use the psychedelic ayahuasca in its practice. The DEA attorney defended the protracted review, citing the need for a thorough investigation due to the substance being "extremely dangerous" and the need to verify the source of the imported ayahuasca. Judges expressed skepticism, suggesting the process should take months, not years. The church filed its petition in 2019 and also sought tax-exempt status. Similar delays have been reported by a cannabis company seeking to become a bulk manufacturer of research-grade marijuana, though a different Washington State church recently had its ayahuasca exemption approved by the DEA without legal challenges. < Back Federal Judge Criticizes DEA Delay on Ayahuasca Religious Petition Nov 19, 2025 Source: Kyle Jaeger Marijuana Moment Article Link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link The DEA is currently under fire for taking its sweet time—nearly six years—to rule on a religious exemption for an Iowa church wanting to use ayahuasca. During recent oral arguments, federal judges didn't hold back, questioning why a process that should take months has dragged on for over half a decade. The agency claims it needs a "thorough investigation" due to the substance's nature, but the court remains skeptical of the massive timeline. This isn't just about one church; other entities, including a cannabis research company, have reported similar bureaucratic roadblocks. For the everyday toker, this legal grilling is a breath of fresh air. It highlights the growing frustration with federal agencies using "complexity" as an excuse for endless delays. Whether it's psychedelics or cannabis rescheduling, we need a government that moves at the speed of reality, not one that sits on petitions for years. Watching a judge call out these stall tactics is a win for anyone waiting on sensible reform and fair access to plant medicine. < Previous Next > Recent Reviews Bomb Popz Infused Pre-Roll - Fade Co.
